The story

Cambuur Stadium 'De Kooi,' in Leeuwarden, is the new home of professional football club SC Cambuur and welcome up to 15,000 visitors per match. From the outset, the ambition was clear: to build the most sustainable stadium in the Netherlands, setting a new benchmark for sports infrastructure.

With thousands of visitors, players and staff using the facility year-round, water consumption posed a significant challenge, particularly in sanitary areas such as changing rooms and toilets. The project team set out to drastically reduce potable water use without compromising hygiene, safety, or user comfort.

We aim to create a future-proof stadium that will enhance property value. As this stadium is designed to serve for the next 40 years, we are incorporating grey water recycling to ensure its sustainability.

How it came to be

A stadium
designed for the future.

Hydraloop was integrated into the stadium's design to collect water from the dressing rooms' showers and hand basins. The system treats this water on site and reuses it to flush the toilets throughout the stadium's main building. Combined with fully waterless urinals, the approach significantly reduces fresh water demand across the facility.

The partnership carries special meaning, as both SC Cambuur and Hydraloop are rooted in Leeuwarden, making this innovation a true local co-production.
