Rainwater and greywater reused for maximum impact.

With drinking water shortages looming, even in water-rich countries like the Netherlands, and climate change bringing longer dry spells and heavier rains, the need for smart water solutions is urgent. Mark and Elvira Rotteveel wanted a better way to dramatically reduce both drinking water demand and wastewater output in their home.

The solution.

As part of a groundbreaking 10-year pilot, the Rotteveels combined a Hydraloop H300 unit with MijnWaterFabriek’s SafeWater technology to create a fully circular water system. Rainwater is collected via a coarse filter into a 10 m³ tank and purified for use in showers, baths, sinks, and the garden. Hydraloop treats greywater from the showers and baths, making it safe for a second use in the toilets and washing machine. Only the kitchen relies on mains water.

The result.

This smart, two-stage system cuts drinking water use by over 90% and reduces wastewater output by 40%, while continuously monitoring water quality and performance. Every drop is reused intelligently, transforming the home into a living example of circular water innovation.

When we started build our new house in 2023, our goal was to save as much as drinking water as possible. We combined a rainwater storage and purifying system with a Hydraloop H300. Because of the Hydraloop, it’s possible to use the rainwater 2 times and safe as much as drinking water as possible (more than 90%!).
