Amateur football club v.v. ONT, based in the Frisian town of Opeinde, is home to 600 members and operates an intensive facility with 63 showers. Like many sports clubs, water use was high, around 700,000 liters per year, driven largely by showers in locker rooms. Determined to reduce its environmental footprint, the club set out to rethink how water was used behind the scenes.
With water prices relatively low in the Netherlands, traditional efficiency measures alone could not deliver meaningful savings or a viable business case. At the same time, the club wanted to take responsibility for reducing potable water use without compromising hygiene, comfort, or daily operations.
The football club installed a Hydraloop water recycling system that collects, treats, and reuses shower water for toilet flushing. The impact was immediate and measurable. Annual water consumption dropped from approximately 700,000 liters to no more than 400,000 liters.
In 2023, v.v. ONT was officially recognised as the 'Dutch Sustainable Sports Facility of the Year' by NOC*NSF, praised for its clear vision, measurable results, and role-model impact.
