Located in the heart of Gibraltar, this 189-apartment elderly care building was designed to provide modern, comfortable living for its residents while prioritizing sustainability. Spacious apartments, communal areas, and a fully equipped launderette ensure everyday convenience and comfort, all within a thoughtfully designed, energy-efficient building.
Operating in a city with strict wastewater constraints posed a critical challenge: Gibraltar's limited infrastructure threatened to reduce the number of apartments and compromise the project's feasibility. Meeting ambitious sustainability goals, such as reducing potable water use, minimizing CO₂ emissions, and ensuring efficient operations, added another layer of complexity for the developers.
To overcome Gibraltar's wastewater limitations without compromising the project's scale or sustainability ambitions, the design team integrated a Hydraloop Cascade water recycling system into the building. The system collects grey water from showers and condensate from air-conditioning units, treats it on site, and reuses it in the building's launderette.
By significantly reducing wastewater discharge and lowering demand for fresh water, the Hydraloop system eased pressure on Gibraltar's desalination plants and resolved the wastewater capacity issue that initially limited the project's size.
