In the newly developed Blitsaerd neighbourhood in Leeuwarden, eight homes were constructed according to Recycle Ready principles, designed to integrate water recycling from the outset. These thoughtfully planned homes feature piping networks prepared for greywater recycling, ensuring they are future-proof and environmentally responsible from day one.
When constructing new homes, this is a relatively cost-effective procedure, making the home future-proof. This project was the first pilot project on a larger scale to field test the initial version of the device and further develop the product.
Each Blitsaerd home was equipped with a Hydraloop H300 device, enabling the collection, treatment, and reuse of greywater within the household. The pilot project allowed Hydraloop to test the initial device at scale, collect performance data, and further develop the product for future residential applications.
The municipality of Leeuwarden supported the initiative with a subsidy for innovation and product development, recognizing the project's role in advancing sustainable building practices. Water savings per household vary depending on family size and behaviour, but the project demonstrates the significant potential of integrated greywater recycling in new construction, paving the way for cost-effective, sustainable homes in the Netherlands and beyond.
